A Brief History of

“The Classic”

The Skoolz Classic was founded in 2000 to celebrate the basketball career of Howard Brown, who helped lead Pottstown to its first ever State Basketball Championship in 1993. Brown was named the PA State Player of the Year in 1995 and went on to become 1000-point scorer and Big East All-Academic Selection at Villanova University.   Before playing professionally, Brown’s family launched the Skoolz Classic to raise money for a scholarship in his name at Pottstown High School.

Since 2000, “The Classic” has featured elite talent.  From PA State Champions and State Players of the Year to future NBA players, such as Wayne Ellington and Gerald Henderson, a long list of talent has graced the Pottstown hardwood.  A grassroots effort continued to plan and direct the Skoolz Classic until Howard’s retirement from pro basketball overseas in 2013. The event not only featured all-star games for pros to school-aged youth, but there were performances, kids activities, and many other Classic features.

In 2012, Howard founded iBall United, a sports marketing and consulting company that focused on supporting US-based basketball players on their path to professional contracts at the International level. The iBall Pro Combine featured games, athletic tests, and skills assessments for players from across the country. Pro personnel (GMs, coaches, and agents) from the US and oversees would travel to Pottstown, New Jersey, and Maryland to evaluate talent. Covid ceased iBall’s operations as a sports agency.

Today, the Classic is sponsored and produced by iBall.  In addition to skills training, marketing, and consulting for aspiring basketball players and coaches, iBall has a history of community service in Pottstown, hosting free youth combines, basketball trainings, and community events such as the Pottstown Sports Carnival.  iBall United now returns to produce the Skoolz Classic, and we are excited to have many participants and volunteers from past events contributing in to continue the legacy
